How Racing Groups Are Organized
USRowing determines racing eligibility by birth year—not school grade.
This means athletes in the same grade may compete in different age categories, while athletes in different grades may race together.
Throughout the season, our coaches organize training groups and racing lineups based on several factors, including:
-
USRowing age eligibility
-
Athlete development and experience
-
Boat speed and competitive opportunities
-
Team needs
As athletes progress, they will primarily compete within their USRowing age category, such as Under 16 (U16), Under 17 (U17), or Under 19 (U19).
For the 2026–27 season, age eligibility is based on the athlete's age during the 2027 calendar year (January 1–December 31, 2027). For example, an athlete who turns 17 at any point during 2027 will compete as a U19 athlete for the entire championship season.
