NSBR MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

The goals of our Middle School program are:

  • An introduction to the sport of Rowing

  • Having fun on and off the water

  • In a safe environment

  • Learn basic technical skills and proper boat handling while developing fitness

We try to spend some time on the water every day. Some days when it is too windy, too wet or the air quality poor, we will schedule other activities; maybe go for a run, do team bonding activities, have an indoor rowing relay race, throw in some core-strengthening and some flexibility work and watch videos of rowing races, or a myriad other activities developed by our creative coaches to teach the critical skills needed to be proficient on the water. Time spent on land activities is just as important as time on the water in developing friendships, teamwork and an appreciation and understanding of the sport.

Boats
Predominantly rowing in our 'barge" and sculling – in singles, doubles, quads for our advanced middle schoolers.

Racing
Middle School racing is informal and fun. We'll scrimmage against each other, race short distances, create obstacle courses, slaloms, and relays. We'll race forward, backward, around buoys, and sometimes flip, get back in the boat and continue. Our goal is for you to come off the water claiming that was the most fun you’d had in a long time. Meanwhile, you will have developed boat-handling and mental skills that will be of enormous value if you decide to join our Junior Racing Team.
