Dan began rowing in 1984, at Oregon State University. As captain of the lightweight men's team, Oregon State won the San Diego Crew Classic, Pac 10 Championship, and placed 4th at the Collegiate National Championships. While rowing for Vesper Boat Club in Philadelphia, Pioneer Valley Rowing in Rhode Island, and Thames River Sculls in Connecticut, Dan amassed 15 US National Rowing Championship medals. 7 gold, 6 silver, and 2 bronze in the lightweight 8+, 4-, 2x, and 1x. Dan also won gold medals in the lightweight 41 at the 1987 Olympic Sports Festival and the 1987 Pan American Games.
Dan Coached while rowing and began coaching again at Long beach Rowing Association in 2008. In 2009 and 2010, he coached the Long Beach Junior Crew Varsity Men. His crews took silver and bronze in the 4+ and 2x in 2009 and silver in the 2x in 2010 at the USRowing Youth National Championships. In 2009, Dan coached the LBJC lightweight men's 2x at the Junior World Trials.
In 2010, Dan coached LBRA's Elite group with Ian Simpson. LBRA took silver in the junior women's lightweight 2- at Youth Nationals and took gold in the junior women's open 2x in 2011. LBRA also placed athletes in the Junior 4x that took silver at the World Championships in 2011 and 2012.
In 2013, Dan and Ian founded SoCal Scullers Club. SoCal Scullers took gold in the junior women's 2x and silver in the junior women's 1x that year at the Southwest Regional Championships. In 2016, SoCal Scullers had two women in the US Olympic Trials finals, taking 2nd and 4th, and a lightweight men's double that took 5th.
